Nina is a bright, quick-witted girl who mom describes as being “relentlessly positive and relentlessly cynical at the same time.” At 15 years old, Nina is battling a nervous system disorder that has left her unable to walk or move around without the use of a walker. She was referred to Make-A-Wish® Utah by her physical therapist, and kept her dry sense of humor throughout her wish process.
Nina loves math and science and aspires to be an astrophysicist. After her referral, Nina first considered a travel wish or a wish to be an astrophysicist for a day; however, she ultimately wanted a wish that would last a lifetime, so in the end she decided on a wish to have a Segway scooter. Before her wish, Nina was using a walker, and she knew that she would soon be confined to a wheelchair. Not wanting to be “the girl in the wheelchair” at her school, she felt that a Segway was the right wish for her.
Nina’s mom said the best part of the wish process was that the Segway was customized to Nina’s interests. The scooter was covered in astrophysical designs and included Nina’s name in her favorite color. Today, Nina is looking forward to attending an engineering camp with Southern Utah University where she will continue to study math and science.
