McKendrick, or Rickee as she is known by her family, is a friendly, fun and energetic girl that instantly captivates everyone that meets her. It has been almost a year since Rickee was first diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Although it has been a difficult road, Rickee and her family have pushed through it together. Rickee loves spending as much time as she can with her family. That is why a trip to Walt Disney World® was the perfect wish for her!
“We are a Disney family,” Rickee’s mom said. They have been to Disneyland many times, but had never been to Walt Disney World in Orlando. Rickee really wanted to experience the differences that the Florida parks offered. She also wanted to make sure they went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios®, because her sisters love Harry Potter. Rickee, on the other hand, loves Ariel and looked forward to seeing her favorite princess the entire trip.
Another first for Rickee was going to Sea World® and petting a dolphin. She loved staying at Give Kids the World®
because she felt comforted knowing that the kids there were in similar medical situations, and that she wasn’t alone. Rickee was too sick to swim throughout the month leading up to her trip, so she particularly enjoyed being able to swim again at Give Kids the World Village.
Rickee’s mom said that the wish experience sparked a remarkable change in Rickee. “I have seen Rickee really come outside of herself and think of the people around her and what they want to do,” Rickee’s mom said. Her mom also says the wish not only gave Rickee and her family something to look forward to, but it gave Rickee something to work for and hope for. The wish changed her attitude and shifted her perspective.
Rickee is finally getting her strength back and is looking forward to being able to start tumbling and cheer again soon.
