“ Ally couldn’t believe that her dream was about to come true!... ”

As William Shakespeare once wrote, “some [people] are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Wish Kid Ally was born great.

When Ally was little, she received a stuffed toy dog that she lovingly named Balto, after the brave Siberian husky sled dog that raced across the frozen arctic terrain in 1925, bringing medicine to sick settlers. Her fascination for mushing was born. As she got older, she was told that she could make a wish. She knew exactly what she wanted: to participate in the Iditarod! She was inspired by the mushers. Just like the men and women who race through ice and snow, Ally knew that despite being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, she could overcome any odds.

After a lot of anxious waiting, it was off to icy Alaska, where the adventure of a lifetime awaited. Ally couldn’t believe that her dream was about to come true! She been reading about Alaska for years, following mushers on social media, watching movies and shows about sled dogs and arctic adventures—finally, it was all at her fingertips. Before the Iditarod, Ally experienced the beauty of Alaska and even went on a behind the scenes tour of the zoo, where she interacted with her favorite animal, the native Alaskan wolf!

When it came time for her to race across the chilly tundra, Ally bundled up and climbed in the sled for the ceremonial start. She felt like a celebrity! People were cheering at the sidelines, cameras were everywhere, and reporters couldn't enough of the fearless 14-year-old who dreamed of mushing in the Iditarod. A loud bang filled the air, and the mushers were off! The cold wind bit Ally’s nose and ears, turning them frosty pink. As snow flurried and huskies barked in the bitter cold, Ally threw dog booties filled with candy to the cheering onlookers. It all whizzed by like a dream.

Now, Ally’s back home but her dog mushing days have only just begun! She met so many mushers in Alaska, and became friends with all of them. Ally stays connected with her snowy celebrities through social media, and has even met mushers here in Utah! She’s already learning how to take care of sled dogs, and hopes to race them. One thing’s for sure: this girl is in for one wild adventure after another. Mush!
